The design of a database includes three basic steps:
  • Conceptual Modeling: The focus is on the datatypes of the application, their relationships and constraints
  • Logical Modeling: Actual implementation of a conceptual modeling into a commercial DBMS
  • Physical Design: The focus is on the storage, memory management, indexing and query processing
