- For the following cases, develop a conceptual model.
- Case 1: A cadastre is a type of land information
system that gives support to the management of land. Basic spatial
object is a parcel upon which land tenure and use tenure are recorded.
Thus, a cadastre is an IS composed of two parts: (1) series of maps
describing the location, shape and size of land parcels (2) text
records describing the attributes of the land. Typical queries for
a cadastre application are:
- Which parcels have the land use type of “x” with
a minimum area of “y” and are located in a specific
spatial window “z”?
- Who were the owners of parcel “x” in block “y”
in the last “z” years?
- Which parcels were owned by “x” in the last “y”
years?
- What are the changes that occurred on parcel “x”
in the last “y” years?
- What were the parcels in block “x” in year “y”?
- What was the last new parcel created in block “x”?
- Case 2: Highway network system supports the control
and management of a transportation system. It is essentially composed
of a network describing the transportation systems and attributes
that describes static and dynamic conditions of the network.
Typical queries are:
- Find the number of cities along the highway “x”

- Find the number of highway intersections of highway “x”.
- List the highways that connect “x” and “y”.
- Find the last intersection on the highway “x”
- How long does it take from “x” and “y”?
- What are characteristics of highway “x” between
“y” and “z”?
- What is the current traffic condition of the route between

- What is the direction of traffic between “x” and
“y”?
- Find highways that cross county “x”?
- What is the shortest path between “x” and “y”?
- Case 3: A forest management system controls the
exploitation and maintenance of forestry resources.Main components
of the system are forest stands, which may be subdivided in partitions
with different forestry resource conditions.
Typical queries are:
- Which forest stands were damaged by fire in Section “x”?
- What was the last harvest in the stand “x”?
- What portion of the stand “x” was harvested in
year “y”?
- What tree specie is in stand “x” in year “y”?
- What is the age of trees in stand “x”?
- When will be the next harvest in stand “x”?
